Calculation Logic & Materiality Gate Rules

Evaluation GateRule ConditionOperational Behavior
Dollar Materiality Gate|Actual − Budget| > DollarThresholdEvaluates absolute dollar impact. Must strictly exceed the threshold to trip the dollar trigger.
Percentage Materiality Gate|Variance %| > PctThresholdEvaluates percentage impact against budget base. When Budget = 0 and Actual ≠ 0, treated as unbudgeted variance.
Dual Gate Status (EXPLAIN)Dollar Gate AND Percentage GateFlags row as EXPLAIN only when both dollar and percentage bounds are strictly exceeded, filtering out immaterial noise and large % on tiny lines.
Expense Polarity ConventionActual > Budget ⇒ UnfavorableOverspending reduces operating income; underspending preserves cash (Favorable).
Revenue Polarity ConventionActual > Budget ⇒ FavorableTop-line outperformance expands gross margin; underperformance is Unfavorable.
